The NCB is a 100-member adult symphonic band with membership drawn from the greater Chicago metropolitan area. Founded in 1956 by the late John P. Paynter, the ensemble has become internationally known and respected for its musical excellence, membership continuity, and service to music education. Dr. Mallory Thompson, director of bands and professor of conducting at Northwestern University, is NCB’s artistic director. Thompson is in great demand as a guest conductor and clinician throughout the United States and is widely regarded as one of the leading wind conductors in the nation.
As a part of their Spring Concert, the NBJH Wind Ensemble will be a part of an “open clinic” with Dr. Mallory Thompson. This portion will allow the students to benefit from Dr. Thompson’s considerable expertise, as well as engaging the audience in the process of refining music for performance.
The Wind Ensemble will then perform three selections they are preparing for performance at an upcoming festival. They will conclude their portion of the concert by sharing the stage with NCB in performance of Randall Standridge’s The Rowan Tree, under the baton of Dr. Thompson. This will be a special experience for the students, performing alongside some the of the most talented musicians in the Chicago area.
The last portion of the concert will feature the Northshore Concert Band. They will be performing selections from composers John Williams, Gustav Holst, Carl Orff, and Henry Fillmore.
The concert is free, and begins at 7pm at Northbrook Junior High, 1475 Maple Avenue, Northbrook. The concert will also be live-streamed at http://www.ustream.tv/channel/d28-music-dept.
